An idiot goes out with a bang!

I've been instructed to not eat anything from now on as the final prep for surgery.

Maybe I'm an idiot after all. I enjoyed my last meal with my colon tonight and violated every dietary commandment. I had a humongous serving of "Mac and Cheese." I'm sure its going to hurt like a mofo. That pain should at least take my mind off the anxiety that's welling up.

Imagine if they postpone the surgery tomorrow! That would be kind of funny in a sick way.

  1. An "idiot" makes decisions where the benefit is obviously low and the cost is obviously high.

By that definition, I am an official idiot for my last feast. Its 2:00 am and I can't sleep, as I run to the bathroom with pain. There is something nice, even comforting, however given the fact that I can't blame anyone but myself for this predicament.

  2. Why not let your colon go out with a bang, right? lol Have fun with your prep today - just keep reminding yourself that this will all just be one horrible memory in 24 hours. :)

  3. Hi Nervous Nelly,

My biggest nerves hit me once I got to the hospital on the day of surgery. I think I was too busy being sick before then to get nervous. But once I was there, I was a ball of nerves! Try to relax though, and focus on how good you will feel soon.

Once you are settled in your room after surgery, remember that walking is the best thing for you - even though you won't feel like getting out of bed at first. Walking will get things moving - and the faster your guts wake up, the sooner you'll be able to eat solid foods.

And don't worry about emptying your bag at first, either. While your in the hospital, the nurses will do it for you. You just have to let them know when its getting full. :) The nice thing about them doing that for you, in combination with having a catheter (sp?), you'll actually get to stay in bed for a whole night! No getting up in the middle of the night to find the bathroom! Something I know you haven't been able to do in god-knows-how-long. I can't guarantee a straight full night's sleep though - the nurses like to wake you up a few times at night to take your vitals.

It'll be a long road to recovery, but it'll be NOTHING like battling UC. I wish you the best!
    Mel
