Guest Comment: The wife speaks about a new normal

I was talking to Steven about Brock Lesnar the Ultimate Fighting Challenge campaign.  For those of you who do not follow UFC fights, Brock Lesnar is a professional wrestler who switched to become a UFC campaign. He is a genetic beast at 6’3 and 285lbs. Not only is he big and strong, but he is fast and flexible. Recently Brock had to have an emergency procedure performed because of a perforated bowel. Thankfully he survived and did not succumb to his illness.

The real battle for Brock will be dealing with his recovery. Here is a man whose entire life is based on his body. All of his income and image is based on being the best fighter in the world. He is now facing what I believe is the greatest challenge of his life. How do you recover knowing your body will never be the same? If he is able to heal and re-enter the world of fighting, will he be as strong as he was? Will the endorsements and sponsorships disappear?

My heart goes out to Brock and his family, this healing time will be very difficult indeed as this fighter will have to re-invent himself and find a new way to be Brock in the world. I think that many people who are recovering from a severe illness find that the healing time is the greatest challenge and requires much patience and acceptance. Healing is an evolving process. It takes time to learn what the new normal will be.

My hope for Steven and Brock is that they don’t spend too much time comparing themselves to who they were before their illness. I think focusing on the joys of being alive and discovering what is now possible will bring a greater sense of joy then looking back to the past. Since we all change over time, I think the happiest people are the ones who embrace their changing selves and look forward to the future of new discoveries.
