GUEST COMMENT: The wife speaks out

Finally a real creative outlet.

You have no idea how long I have been waiting for this to happen. I am not saying that it surprises me that Steven has a creative side. On the contrary, I have seen many examples of his creativity play out throughout the nine years we have been together. The big difference is, this creative outlet is not tied to creating a multinational corporation.

I remember the toy that he started designing for our pet parrot. This had all of the appearance of a good craft project that would become enjoyed and then destroyed by Baby Bird. But no, very early on I could see the wheels in Steven’s head turning as he called up his Intellectual Property Lawyer to secure what could become a brilliant invention that all parrot owners would line up miles just to bring home to their birds. Unfortunately Baby Bird just really cares about eating and ripping up paper so the toy didn’t last long.

I think it was something in his childhood that stamped out play for the sake of play. The result is any fun idea that begins as a possible hobby free of ego and competition, very quickly becomes copyrighted, patented and worked on with a passion of a prisoner escaping a third world jail. I am not putting down anyone for being industrious but it’s people like Steven who make me feel lazy. Maybe I was spoiled as a child and just not pushed, but is there something wrong with just playing for the sake of play?

  1. My dear wife, you helped make me a millionaire. Before we met I had two million.

  2. And by the way, I was raised old school, unlike you with your new age, beat-poet parents who still walk around in birkenstocks and groove on about the great time they had in Woodstock.

From when I was 4 years old, my dad used to beat me with a wooden ladle if I chose play over work. Rest was for the lazy and play was absolutely verbotten. I remember being locked in the garden shed in a burlap sack on my fifth birthday because I played with a teddy bear that a reckless neighbour gave me...instead of raking leaves. And I learned a great lesson that day. Teddy bears and play are dangerous, work is good.

  3. Never forget to nurture the inner child! Bad things happen if he is unhappy and throws a temper-tantrum.

  4. How different our world view is about WORK! In my case I follow my dear grandmother's noble example, whose escuse for not working was, that she actually attended the funeral march of WORK in 1919. When the workers in Miskolc, in her hometown painted WORK on the side of an empty coffin and indeed buried it for good. So what do you expect from our side after this?

  5. My parents are unable to respond with their views on this because they are working right now.

  8. I wish we were in the Bay area. You should see the crappy weather here in Toronto. Here all we can do is stay in and commiserate.
