Nearly fainted but wife saved me.

I got so worked up today while changing the appliance that I nearly made myself faint. I don't know if it is the prednisone being tapered or a panic attack but I had to lie down in the middle of the change because otherwise I felt like I'd collapse.

My fear when doing the change is that if my skin gets infected or inflamed that the barrier won't stick to it properly and it would cause more leaks and trouble. Anyways, my trusty wife helped make sure everything was OK.

Emotionally adjusting to this new part of my body is very trying. Unfortunately I don't yet accept my new body part nor the bag though I do cognitively appreciate them for saving my life. I'm sure emotional acceptance comes with time.

By the way: Something I never understood (perhaps because I have issues with feces)- How do people with stomas shower without the bag on? Don't they care that poop falls out onto their feet/in the tub? Also, I would just feel bad doing "that" to the tub that other people (my wife) use.

  1. You will stop having issues around feces within a few months of getting the bag. I'm almost sure of it. ;) I prefer to shower with the bag on even though it gets wet and hard to dry off. But if you wash your feet/legs/whatever afterwards, at the end of your shower, then you'll be fine. And wash out the tub when you're done. Is it too much different than peeing in the shower? Doesn't everyone do that? ;)
