I'm still having some minor complications (some skin irritation) but otherwise this new life seems to have started. The first 6 or 7 weeks were kind of miserable but here I go now, starting to feel better and better.
I'm going to do what other ostomates don't seem to do: I've begun to do a lot of ab work (crunches and side-ab exercises) to get my core strong. This will hopefully get rid of my hernia risk (which is statistically high now given the hole in my belly). Strong abs should allow me to do more intense workouts later without worrying about a hernia. I will try to do weights and bike riding (extreme downhill MTB riding if possible) and report back on my progress. Also, I've ordered an ostomy armour guard which is to protect my "equipment" in case I am doing anything really dangerous (eg I go back into kickboxing).
Update re cardiovascular health: 3 weeks ago I could barely walk much. Yesterday I walked up 28 flights of stairs in a high rise building. It's exciting to know what tomorrow will bring.
Oh, one other cool thing: I've found that after surgery what were once insatiable cravings for simple carbs and wheat products no longer seem to exist. I find that I crave food with substance now, more than ever before in my life. Empty calories are somewhat repulsive (most of the time.) I wonder if the cravings were due to a diseased colon. Any comments or feedback would be appreciated. (Fellow ostomates: did you find any substantial changes in appetite/cravings after surgery?)

Yippy! I am so happy you are feeling better.
ReplyDeleteWhat, you think that because you pop out of the woodwork one time in the last 6 weeks to comment on the blog that our marriage will be saved? After you cheated on me with Tiger Woods I don't think I can trust you anymore. And besides that, you never comment on my blog.

ReplyDeleteHow embaressing it would be that at our first workout together, you will kick my ass. This is a good incentive to start working out again ...
ReplyDelete-Yo
Glad to hear you are working out already! I'm just now feeling like I could start working out, and I'll be going back under the knife in 7 days. It's the fun two-steps-forward, one-step-back. Keep up the good work!!
ReplyDeleteYo, my goal is to annihilate you when we hit the gym! Imagine me beating you on bench and chin ups. Think of the chinups advantage my cyborg body provides: I can empty my bag and lose 1/2 a pound of weight. Plus without a colon I now weigh 4 lbs less. Add it all up and you are going to eat dust my friend! (And if I'm wrong, no loss I can play the "I just returned from surgery" card)
ReplyDeleteHey Steven, just an update. I called Mt Sinai and was told Robin is going to review my cat scan results with the radiologist and call me tomorrow or Thursday to discuss. Sounds like I won't have to go down to the hospital, which would be nice when I am busy with quarter end activities at work. Hoping she calls tomorrow as I hate waiting and not knowing.
ReplyDeleteIt's a big hassle going to the hospital, finding parking, waiting in the waiting room. This is great news. Now let's hope the results from the C scan are good!
