On a separate note, I'll be needing a second major surgery about 4 months from now as there is too much to do in one operation given my current health. :(

vibration therapy
Given the bone density losses and difficulty of doing too much physical exertion over the few months coming up after surgery, I wonder about trying "Power Plates"/Wavexercise therapy. I'll be checking it out as soon as I can drive, to see if it can be used to strengthen up my core, without creating intraabdominal pressure (eg via crunches). That would be great for hernia prevention and rebuilding a foundation of health. Apparently, these devices boost bone density and help maintain/increase muscle mass.
